It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of former Oswestry School teacher Alan Stratford. He was a man beloved by many, and will be remembered as a true gentleman and exceptional teacher.
Alan came to Oswestry School in 1965 to teach History, but before long was also coaching cricket and football. During his long innings at Oswestry School, he promoted OO football and cricket and was deeply involved with Oswestry Cricket Club, whom he played for for many years.
One of his achievements was establishing the Martyrs cricket team - a team anyone with links to Oswestry School, former pupils teachers and staff, could join. The Martyrs played many games and even enjoyed a few tours. Nick Broadbent OO was a team member and said: "It was a really wonderful thing he did establishing the Martyrs, it really kept alive the spirit of Oswestry School cricket long after we pupils left school.
"He was a true gentleman, everyone liked him, he was not known to lose his temper and he had a nice dry sense of humour, he had so many good qualities, - he was inspirational."
We extend our deepest sympathy to Alan’s family and friends.
